Modular Power Supplies
Modular power supplies feature cable management. When installing the power supply, only the actually needed connections are plugged in via sockets, while any unused cable strands are best left in their original packaging.
Modular Power Supplies for Tidy Systems
Two forms of cable management are often distinguished:
- With semi-modular cable management, only part of the connections are designed to be removable. Depending on which cables are permanently attached, all unnecessary connections can be removed. This successfully avoids cable clutter in the system.
- With fully modular cables, all cable strands, including the 20+4-pin ATX mainboard and 4+4-pin CPU connections, are removable. In addition to the ability to remove unused connections, there are two other advantages: During installation, it is possible to first screw in the power supply and only connect the cables at the end. This often makes assembly easier, especially in tight cases. Moreover, the standard cables can be replaced with specialized models, such as those from the CableMod range or custom-made modding cables.
As a result, modular power supplies are now preferred by the majority of buyers over models with permanently attached cables, despite a small additional cost.
