Ada Lovelace SM

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti: The Ada Lovelace GPU architecture

The Ada GPU architecture offers several optimizations over Ampere. The number of CUDA cores per SM (Streaming Multiprocessors) has increased to 60. An ADA Lovelace SM can perform either 60 FP32 or 30 FP32 and 30 INT32 computations depending on the workload. Each SM thus consists of four blocks, each with 16 FP32 ALUs and FP32/INT32 ALUs. As with Ampere, each SM has a ray tracing computing core.

With 60 SMs, the RTX 4070 Ti has 7,680 CUDA cores (3,840 FP32 and FP32/INT32 ALUs) and 60 ray tracing cores. The 60 SMs are divided into 6 GPCs (Graphics Processing Clusters) on the RTX 4070 Ti, and each SM has 4 tensor cores. However, the tensor cores in version 4 on the Ada GPUs are significantly more powerful than on Ampere.

Ray tracing performance of the RTX 4070 Ti

Ada GPUs are equipped with a new technology called Shader Execution Reordering (SER) that can increase ray tracing performance by up to three times compared to the Ampere generation. This efficiently sorts command workloads, allowing in-game FPS to increase by up to 25%.

Ray tracing (RT) enables realistic lighting by simulating the physical properties and behavior of light. RT calculates the color of individual pixels during the path that light takes from the user's eye through a 3D landscape. The light traverses the 3D scenery and is reflected by objects or generates reflections. At the same time, shadows, transparent, or semi-transparent objects are created. This results in light refractions or distortions.

Ray tracing combines all these effects to display the final color of a pixel on the monitor. So far, ray tracing has primarily been used in movies to create special effects. These scenes often use render farms, and calculating complex 3D animations and special effects for movies can take several weeks. Due to the complexity of ray tracing, PC applications such as computer games are usually filled with 3D objects based on a raster model. In rasterization, 3D objects are modeled from a network of triangles or polygons. In the rendering pipeline, these triangles of the 3D model are individually converted into pixels on a 2D image plane. The pixels can then be further processed ("shaded").


Tensor & DLSS 3

Since the 4th generation tensor cores have higher performance compared to the 3rd generation, Ada can achieve four times higher frame rates with DLSS 3 than with native rendering. Tensor cores are computing cores specially developed for deep learning, used for AI-based DLSS.

These matrix-based computing cores are equipped with special data paths for optimized floating-point computation throughput and offer increased energy efficiency. Especially training and inference, as components of deep learning, benefit from the tensor cores. Training, learning new skills based on existing data, is performed with the help of tensor computing cores with up to five times higher TFLOP performance than with Ampere.
