The Thermal Grizzly WireView GPU, 1x 12VHPWR (Reverse) in Detail

The Thermal Grizzly WireView GPU is a device for measuring and displaying measurements such as power consumption, voltage, and current of PCI expansion cards like graphics cards with 12VHPWR power connection. As an additional benefit, the U-shaped design of the adapter allows for optimised cable management for a clean cable setup.

What does the WireView GPU do?

The WireView GPU allows for measuring the power consumption of graphics cards and recording this data to determine power usage. This data can be used, for example, to calculate the electricity costs of a graphics card or to compare power consumption with other graphics cards.

Simultaneously, by measuring power consumption, the power usage of graphics cards over a specific period or during specific applications can be determined. Additionally, power consumption spikes ("peaks") can be identified, which can occur during the operation of current high-end graphics cards.

The following information can be displayed on the OLED display of the WireView GPU:

  • Current power consumption in watts [W]
  • Current power consumption in watts [W], voltage in volts [V], and current in amperes [A]
  • Minimum and maximum power consumption in watts [W]
  • Average power consumption averaged over 60 seconds [AVG W] and total power consumption [E]

Why a power meter for the graphics card?

The WireView GPU shows the power consumption of a graphics card in real-time. This is especially interesting for extreme overclockers and hardware reviewers, but it is also helpful when testing the performance of a graphics card. Since no additional software needs to run to capture power consumption, the measurement does not affect benchmark results.

When manually overclocking the graphics card (e.g. with MSI Afterburner, ASUS GPU Tweak, EVGA Precision), the adjustments made in the software in terms of power consumption can be directly monitored on the OLED display of the WireView GPU.

In addition to real-time power consumption display, the WireView GPU internally stores the measured data. This allows for capturing the average power usage of the graphics card over an extended period. The memory can be reset during operation. In addition to graphics cards, other PCI expansion cards are compatible with the WireView GPU as long as they have the corresponding 12VHPWR power connection.

Which WireView GPU is needed?

Regardless of the type and number of PCIe power connectors on the graphics card, its orientation is crucial for choosing the right WireView GPU. The WireView GPU is available in "Normal" (N) and "Reverse" (R) versions.

If the graphics card is equipped with PCIe power connectors where the retaining clips of the connectors are oriented away from the PCB, the N variant is required. In the normal horizontal installation of the graphics card, this would be at the bottom. This variant is the most common type of connector orientation.

If the graphics card is equipped with PCIe power connectors where the retaining clips of the connectors are oriented towards the PCB, the R variant is needed. In the normal horizontal installation of the graphics card, this would be at the top. This can be easily identified by the presence of cutouts in the PCB for the connector retaining tabs.

Attention, important note: Risk of injury!

Depending on the graphics card used, but especially in the case of the GeForce RTX 4090, up to 450 watts of power flow through the WireView connectors. The resulting heat can heat the PCB at the WireView connector to up to 60 degrees Celsius in the case of an air-cooled graphics card. In the case of a water-cooled graphics card without airflow, the PCB of the WireView can heat up to 100 degrees Celsius! The WireView case should not be touched during operation. After turning off the system, the WireView should be allowed to cool down before handling it.
