AMD Ryzen Logo
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, part of the Vermeer family of processors, has 8 CPU cores based on the "Zen 3" architecture. Following on from "Zen", "Zen +" and "Zen 2", this is the fourth generation Zen micro-architecture. Unlike the previous generations, each processor core now has access to the entire L3 cache. As a result, in-game performance has increased significantly. In addition, the Ryzen 5000 processors offer a significantly increased IPC.

Paired with an AMD X570 or B550 chipset, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D supports PCI Express 4.0 that is twice as fast as its predecessor PCIe 3.0. All Ryzen 5000 processors use the AM4 platform and were developed for use with AMD 500 series chipsets. An update to the BIOS version AGESA V2 1.2.0.6 B or newer is required.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D at a Glance:

AMD Ryzen 7
  • 8 "Zen 3" cores with a low TDP of just 105 watts
  • Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT for a total of 16 threads
  • Very high single and multithreaded performance
  • 3.4 GHz base clock and 4.5 GHz turbo with Precision Boost 2
  • Extremely fast PCI Express 4.0 interface (only with AMD X570 and B550)
  • Large cache with 3D V-Cache Technology: 4 MB L2 and 96 MB L3
  • Highly efficient 7 nm FinFET transistors
  • AVX2 instruction set for sophisticated vector executions

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8-Core CPU with 4.5 GHz Precision Boost 2

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Box
The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D has eight physical CPU cores. Thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), each core can process two threads at the same time. Adding these eight virtual cores makes for a total of 16 logical computing cores. The eight-core mid-range model works with a high base clock of 3.4 GHz per core, which adapts precisely to the respective application scenario in real time using Precision Boost 2. It automatically increases the clock speed up to 4.5 GHz within the scope of the Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 105 watts.

The CPU cores' silicon has been lithographed through the advanced 7 nm FinFET manufacturing process, which makes use of stacked transistors (also known as 3D transistors) using Extreme Ultraviolet Technology (EUV). The space gained on the processor die, thanks to the greatly reduced structure sizes, enables the integration of more cache memory.

The I/O chiplet in the CPU package responsible for the data lanes is produced using a 12 nm FinFET process and provides 24 PCIe lanes, four of which are reserved to connect to the motherboard chipset and NVMe SSDs. This leaves 16 lanes for communication with graphics cards, while the other PCIe lanes provide for additional NVMe flash drives, expansion cards, and peripheral devices depending on the motherboard chipset.

PCI Express 4.0 with AMD X570 and B550 Chipset Motherboards

AMD Ryzen 7 Box
In combination with an AMD X570 or B550 chipset, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D supports version 4.0 of the PCI Express standard. PCIe 4.0 is downward compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations. Each PCIe 4.0 lane allows for data transfer rates that are twice as high as for PCIe 3.0. An NVMe SSD connected via four PCIe 4.0 lanes can achieve a theoretical read/write speed of up to 7.8 GB/s.

The AM4 platform also offers contemporary external device connections such as USB 3.1 with type-A and/or type-C ports and high data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s. The CPU's integrated memory controller supports fast and energy-efficient DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode with or without ECC (error correction), at a native clock frequency of 3200 MHz. Significantly higher clock speeds are possible by overclocking.

AMD's 3D V-Cache technology boosts gaming performance

With 3D V-Cache, AMD is launching a technology that significantly increases average performance in games. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is equipped with an incredible 96 MB level 3 cache thanks to 3D V-Cache technology. The previous 32 MB level 3 cache of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X is enhanced by two additional 32 MB memory chips thanks to an innovative stacking process.

Why does the new memory give you more gaming performance? If there is no more space in the cache due to intensive use, data is swapped out in the main memory. However, the access times to the RAM are significantly higher than those of the cache memory, which is located directly on the CPU. Thanks to the large 3D V-cache, the processor can quickly access significantly more data and accelerate calculations. Your system can perform more actions in less time. Especially computationally intensive games benefit tremendously - more frames per second guarantee a smoother gaming experience.
